Trips

At Shears Green Junior School we believe in giving children opportunities and experiences to capture their interest and enhance their love for learning.

1.        School trips offer our pupils the chance to learn in a real-world context, beyond the confines of the classroom. They provide hands-on experiences that deepen understanding and engagement with the curriculum.

2.      School trips expose our pupils to new environments, cultures, and perspectives. They can help to develop well-rounded young people.

3.      School trips often involve teamwork, collaboration, and the development of new friendships.

There are times when children make local visits, normally on foot, to Cygnet Leisure Centre for swimming (in Year5), the library or local points of interest such as: St Mary’s Church, Ebbsfleet United football stadium, or Gravesend town centre.  We also have links with other schools in the Northfleet Trust, where the children can use their amazing facilities, for example when Year 4 visit NTC for rock climbing and bouldering.

Parents will have completed a permission slip on arrival at our school and this will last for the duration of their time at Shears Green Junior School; however, teachers will ask for parents to sign a specific permission slip so that they are aware of the details of the trip.

We sometimes take the children out of school for visits to museums and other places of interest, such as:  Leeds Castle, the Living Land Exhibition, in Detling and Bluewater Shopping Centre, amongst others. These trips are typically linked to the curriculum and enhance the children’s learning.

We also offer extra-curricular experiences, such as when Year 6 visit Chessington World of Adventures in the summer term; when the Challenger Troup visit Year 4 to carry out teambuilding activities and when Year 3 visit Jeskyns Community Woodland.

We normally ask parents/carers to help contribute to the cost of such outings.

Each year we organise an amazing overnight experience for our Year 5 children in the autumn term.  All children are offered the opportunity to take part in Cosmic Camp. Usually, this experience includes an extraordinary visit from the Crayford Astronomical Society, who bring a selection of powerful telescopes to view the planets and moons- one year we saw the International Space Station fly past! In addition, the children take part in songs around the campfire, an outdoor disco, a film in the hall and finally they camp in tents on the school field.

We normally ask parents/carers for a small contribution for this experience.

Every year, in the week after the October half term, all of the Year 6 children have the opportunity to visit PGL, Little Canada, on the Isle of Wight. The aim is for the children to have fun, build friendships and experience a full programme of outdoor learning.  They challenge themselves and develop their teamwork skills, in a place that is unfamiliar to them.  For some children, it is their first experience of going on a ferry and being away from home- it is a trip that allows the children to make lifelong memories.

The cost of this trip is approximately £300, which can be paid in instalments throughout their time in Year 5.
